Women's Equality Day

Hello Women of the World!

"Today (Wednesday) is Women's Equality Day, a celebration of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution which acknowledged the right of women to vote.
While it seems like ancient history -- the amendment became law in 1920 -- we still have a long way to go. Gender discrimination still exists, most notably in the work place. Women are paid 78 cents on average for every dollar earned by men. The disparity is even greater for women of color." The rest of this article from the Huffington Post... http://tinyurl.com/lmj4nz

The Power of Nice

Hello Women of the World!

Thank you dear Robin Koval, author of the inspiring book The Power of Nice:How to Conquer the Business World with Kindness. The book breaks down the "power" of nice into six "principles" including:

  • Positive impressions are like seeds. A smile, a thank-you, a genuine laugh - all seeds. You plant them and forget about them, but underneath the surface, they're growing and expanding.
  • You never know. Treat everyone you meet as if he is the most important person in the world - because he is. You never know what could bappen.
  • People change. Never forget the potential power of the intern, assistant or receptionist. You have no idea who might become improtant in five, ten or even twenty years.
  • Nice must be automatic. You can't "turn on" nice when it benefits you. Nice needs to become habit.
  • Negative impressions are like germs. Rude gestures and remarks are like germs - at first you may not see the impact they have, but they are silently infecting you and everyone around you.
  • You will know. Even if you never again see a person that you have treated badly, you will know. And that knowing could jeopardize the outcome of other future relationships.

I highly recommend this book! As Marcia Gay Harden cites, "Can you imagine if Enron executives had practiced the Power of Nice?"

Tip of the Week # 13

Hello Women of the World!

For this Tip of the Week...

Last month, Ting Ting Guo posted on our Facebook Discussion Board “Let’s become mentors to the intern workforce while helping our own ventures grow!”

The Sankofa, a mythical bird found in a West African proverb, is a symbol for the importance of learning from the past. Let’s review and reclaim our previous experiences as we move forward to positions of leadership. True progress for women perpetuates when we “Bring Them Up” as we guide, support, and enrich the careers of young women through mentoring.
